Dairy Free Calcium - July 4th, 2009

While dairy can be harmful to the body, cause acne, and cause other problems in general, it can be especially harmful for those who are allergic to milk or lactose intolerant.  There are also those vegans or others who choose to eliminate it from their diet without that kind of motivation.  But whether you choose to drink milk or not, you need a certain amount of calcium in your diet, generally between 1000 and 1300mg of calcium per day.  For a dairy eater you can get this in a couple of glasses of milk every day.  But for someone who doesn’t drink milk, it is obviously a little bit more complicated.

Essentially speaking, if you don’t have enough calcium, your bones, teeth, and weight suffer for it.  There is a reason why they say that a certain amount of dairy every day helps you to lose weight.  But if you need other choices, you can look into varying options such as ready to eat cereals, soy milk, orange juice, tofu, and instant oatmeal.  In addition, vegetables like collard greens, spinach turnip greens, kale, okra, beat greens, Chinese cabbage, and broccoli can help.  In terms of meats, many find that sardines, pink salmon, ocean perch, blue crab, clams, and rainbow trout.  There are varying sources of calcium found in multiple forms, and you can find them if you just know where to look.

Fruits Of Choice - July 2nd, 2009

Now if you eat fruits all the time in general or one specific fruit, you will lose weight.  There is no way to not lose weight by doing that.  But there are specific foods that you can eat and specific fruits that you can eat to really optimize your weight loss without specifically sticking to fruits in general and only that.

First you can try bananas.  Bananas are extremely high in fiber, and they are also loaded with potassium, and 75% of a banana is made up of water.  So this all adds up to greater and improved results in general.  It also helps with electrolyte balance in general.

Second, grapefruit-grapefruit according to studies has been shown to help obese people lose weight with increased insulin levels to metabolize sugars.  It has been used in a diet of its own, and it is true it can help your weight loss efforts with regular use, if used correctly of course.

Third, try cantaloupe.  Cantaloupe can help you with few calories such as 60 calories per cup, and it is loaded with vitamins and minerals as well as other nutrients and antioxidants.  Now I personally prefer strawberries above any of these as well as kiwis.  But these are the ones with the highest ability to promote greater weight loss.

The Social Challenges Of Obesity - May 4th, 2009

They say that adoption is the only crime in which the victim is expected to be grateful.  Likewise, obesity is possibly the only disease and handicap for which society does not feel sympathy, but rather ridicule and disgust.  While obesity is to some degree controlled by the individual, there are plenty of individuals who remain uninformed about the treatments not because they want to remain overweight, but because of the presence of so much faulty information and the confusion of it all.  While some believe that obesity runs in families, even those with a higher rate of obesity in their families seem to have little sympathy, ironically even less understanding in some cases.

Especially when developed in childhood, obesity can lead to lower self esteem rates, because they suffer not only the embarrassment of sometimes not being able to sit in a regular chair, find clothes that fit, or otherwise, but the ridicule can be extreme.  Everyone wants to have friends, and everyone wants to be popular.  But when that popularity comes from constantly having to be the comedian, even when you don’t necessarily feel that joy, and sometimes being seen as the “jolly fat guy”, it quickly gets old and tiring.  That can result in further personal sabotage, including binges involving comfort foods and sugary drinks.  A certain self loathing can develop in this person, and instead of taking care of their body, eating right, exercising, etc, they start to participate in other self defeating behaviors.

This loss of confidence can be hard in adulthood.  But if developed in early childhood, that confidence may never actually develop in the first place, making it hard to develop, regain, or maintain.  After all, how can you regain or maintain something that was never there in the first place.

Some doctors have used hypnotherapy, talk therapy, and other alternative methods to treat obesity and help sufferers to gain a new outlook and therefore new results and a new self confidence that will help them to finally change their lives.  Once that outlook is gained, they look for ways to change physical habits and therefore change the consequences from negative to positive, from self defeating to helpful.  Many start out with methods such as yoga, which may also help users to relax and gain a different state of mind in and of themselves.  Some stick to these methods while others move onto aerobics, running, and weight lifting over time.  While some eventually turn to more extreme methods such as bariatric surgery, these definitely require a change in lifestyle and mindset, and as such, any extreme method requires patients to simultaneously undergo therapy among other things to help them to adjust to their new lifestyle and develop healthy habits.
